Helping a Survivor

Do’s and Don’ts

Do:

  • Ask if something is wrong
  • Express concern
  • Listen and validate
  • Ask how you can help
  • Respect their boundaries
  • Support their decisions
  • Educate yourself so that you can offer resources. Let them know there are places like the Family Justice Center that can help them.

Don’t:

  • Wait for them to come to you
  • Judge or blame
  • Pressure them
  • Give advice
  • Place conditions on your support
